San Luis Obispo, California: Mission San Luis Obispo, January, 2009 Just over a mile from my home, Mission San Luis Obispo is at the center of our city. Avila Beach, California: Concours d’Elegance 2008 With a flood of Ferraris, pride of Porsches, a riot of Rolls Royces, and an embarrassment of Mercedes, (a gaggle of Gull-wings?), (a mess of Maseratis?), (a pack of Packards?) this event is held annually to benefit Hospice of San Luis Obispo. Here are some examples of group portraits using panoramic photography.
California: 112 WHAMOBASS 2007 participants at the 43rd annual gathering of the group. This is the assembly of pilots and crew for the annual ballooning event called WHAMOBASS – Whiskey-Hill, Atherton, Menlo-Oaks Ballooning and Sporting Society. This image was done with the Canon camera and PTGUI software, a combination that results in much better resolution and image quality. Click here for a close-up showing the detail in the image.
The result is a photographic quality image that can be printed at sizes beyond 50 inches in width without appreciable noise or image degradation.
Cast of “Fiddler on the Roof” at the Performing Arts Center, San Luis Obispo, California, February 19, 2000.
The San Luis Obispo Vocal Arts Ensemble performs its annual Pops Concert every winter. In 2000 the performance featured works from Fiddler on the Roof, among others. The group portait below was made with four frames of 35mm film photogaphed as a panoramic image.
I switched to the Canon 1DS Mark II camera in January, 2005, and have been shooting with that camera since then. I enjoy the extraordinarily high resolution of that camera (16.7 Mp) and the quality of the images. For panoramic images I use the Canon 17-40mm zoom lens, usually set at about 20mm.
I also switched to a new stitching tool in 2006 – PTGUI – which allows me to work with higher resolution files, and with the new operating system on Macintosh computers (Apple never updated QTVRAS).
And, in 2008 I upgraded to a Mac Pro with four dual-core Intel processors. This makes a huge difference in processing speed on these panoramic images. Some of my latest work results in images that are over 500MB in size, and the new computer makes handling those images much more reasonable.
